The Process
Crude distillation, explained.
Crude oil is heated in a furnace and fed into a tall distillation column. Lighter products such as gases and gasoline rise to the top, while heavier streams such as diesel and residue settle lower. Each stream is drawn off, treated and routed for further processing or blending.
